Economic and social renaissance Kolwezi, traditionally known as the ‘lung of the Congolese economy’, is a city in the ore-rich Katanga Province in the south of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kolwezi was founded in 1938 by the Union Minière du Haut Katanga as the headquarters of its newly-created western division. As an important mining centre for copper and cobalt roughly 4,000 people of an estimated population  gure of 600,000 work primarily in the mining sector and its related supply services.
